Workshop Focus
During the workshop, we will begin to develop a system of movement whose goal is the "kinesthetic deprogramming" or cleansing the palate of the body to return it to this natural, or childlike, state of receptivity.
By removing the movement context that society, culture, and dance training impart, Yannis hopes to create a blank slate from which a new and unknown movement context may be discovered.
• introduce a greater breadth and clarity in the body
• strengthening the individual’s artistic voice
• utilizing technique to refine the body’s capacity as an expressive instrument
• awareness, energy flow through the body, use of breath
• the use of release as a way to support and increase shape
Each day of the workshop will begin with a technique class followed by movement research.
Performances at Dock 11
July 16-17-18-19, 2009
Thur - Sun: 8:30pm
"Raqs al Moza" European Premiere
Choreography: Yannis Adoniou
Dramaturgy: Talal Al-Muhanna
Music: Alex Davis, Tom Waits, Radiohead
Lighting: Lisa Pinkham
Dancers: Marina Fukushima, Spencer Dickhaus
"Raqs al Moza" (which translates as "Banana Dance" from Arabic) is a dance theater piece about a boy and a girl in love during war times. It is a work about humor, breaking away from our habit, not only in choreography, but in much of society, to take ourselves and our work so seriously that we don't allow the natural impulse of laughter and delight to put things in perspective in the broad scope of our lives.
The Residency and performances are made possible through the generous support of Dock 11 and the Kulturamt Berlin.
