Description:
Over the course of 2 weeks participants are guided in conceiving, choreographing, shooting, editing and presenting an up to 5 minute dance-based media work in collaboration with other workshop participants. The workshop - led by dance filmmaker Talal Al-Muhanna in cooperation with choreographer Yannis Adoniou - includes instruction in dance and dance-for-camera practice; screenings of dance-based films; and individual coaching on project development. Participants may develop projects in a wide-range of styles, genres and techniques: from experimental to documentary to installation or stage-based projections. Films may be shot in studio or on location.

Most of the second week, workshop participants will be working independently with their editors at SFAI, 800 Chestnut Street, San Francisco 94133 (a ten minute walk from SFDC). Thus, if students live in the bay area they can plan their editing time around work schedules.

No prior camera or editing experience is required. Dance artists will be paired with videographers/editors from the San Francisco Art Institute.

Camera and editing equipment will be provided by the generous support and collaboration of San Francisco Art Institute. However, Students are encouraged to purchase an external hard-drive to store their project on.

All participants will gather for a final showing on Friday, Jan 23 at 5:30 pm at SFDC.

ABOUT SFDC/ LINES Ballet

San Francisco Dance Center is the home of Alonzo King's LINES Ballet, LINES Pre-Professional Program and a BFA program offered in partnership with Dominican University. SFDC and all of LINES educational programs seek to cultivate strong and exceptionally trained artists who value artistic risk-taking and independent thinking. From our year around programming, to summer study and special workshops we seek to provide dancers the opportunity to experience the depth of expression that is possible through dance through training with former LINES dancers, thriving San Francisco based choreographers, and dance artists from around the world. In its inaugural year, REVIVE is a new annual curated series that we created to bring together the populations of all of our programs highlighting the growth of international connections within our organization.
