Kathleen Hermesdorf, KS arts Teacher
Kathleen Hermesdorf is the Artistic Director of La ALTERNATIVA. Her style has been called luscious, sensate and mercurial. She has been a member of Bebe Miller & Company, Margaret Jenkins Dance Company and Contraband/Sara Shelton Mann. She continues to participate in Mann's company, and has worked in long-term collaboration with Scott Wells, Stephanie Maher and Kim Epifano, among others. Hermesdorf has been dancing in the Bay Area since 1991 and has received significant support from the Zellerbach Family Foundation, CHIME/MJDC and the San Francisco Arts Commission. She has extensive and outstanding training in modern and post-modern dance modalities, release-based techniques, improvisation, contact improvisation, jazz, ballet, various martial arts and somatic investigations, and holds a BFA and MFA in Dance Performance & Pedagogy.
La ALTERNATIVA (formerly MOTIONLAB), directed by dancer Kathleen Hermesdorf and musician Albert Mathias in San Francisco since 1998, is a vessel and instrument for deeply integrated dance and music, collaboration and international interdisciplinary exchange and action, offering performance, production and training (Alternative Conservatory). The performance work has been deemed "strongly original", "intensely convincing", and containing "feral impulse and raw beauty". The organization has received support from the Zellerbach Family Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, CASH/Theatre Bay Area, and ODC Theater. Current projects include the other edge of there is here with light & visual designer Elaine Buckholtz, Etranger with video artist Yoann Trellu and musician Laurent Lavolé, and Armario #3 by Omar Carrum. La ALTERNATIVA is currently in residence at KUNST-STOFF arts, where Hermesdorf is co-Education Director via Alternative Conservatory.
Alternative Conservatory is instigated and curated by La ALTERNATIVA to cultivate, enrich, and affect the form and field of dance via professional level training in 21st century motives, manifestations and relationships to other art forms. It is an immersive, intensive, international, modular and mobile training ground, alternative and complementary to academia, and an arena for serious engagement and exchange. AC has a home base at KUNST-STOFF arts in San Francisco, and works in collaboration with P.O.R.C.H./Stephanie Maher in Stolzenhagen, Germany (www.ponderosa-dance.de) and Delfos/Claudia Lavista & Omar Carrum in Mazatlán, Mexico (www.delfosdanza.com).
